I switched up my hunt for sea glass with a jaunt to search for beach glass along the lovely Delaware River. Battery Park in Old New Castle Delaware is steeped in history and was originally used as an artillery fortification against enemy ships. Present day Battery Park provides a beach to relax and enjoy the view, walking paths, and picnic areas. All About the Beach
Battery Park is located on the Delaware River, so the "waves" are very gentle. It's mainly a pebble beach with some sandy areas. You'll need a keen eye while exploring this shore. Parks and Recreation does work to keep the beach area trash-free, but you will find many pieces of glass that aren't "cooked" yet, so shoes are a must! This narrow beach is also excellent for finding driftwood. There were piles the day we explored!

What You Need to Know
Find of a Lifetime - 300+ Year Old Clay Pipe
Maureen of Hold the Gluten (my East Coast partner in crime when hunting for sea and beach glass), found a once in a lifetime treasure buried in the muck at Battery Park! The tide had gone way out (which is why it's always important to check tide charts). She took the opportunity to explore the uncovered area right next to the boat landing (luckily she brought her rubber boots). Her finds included a beach tag from 1968, an intact glass bottle (that she'll fill with beach glass), and the fabulous 300+ year old clay pipe pictured below! The clay pipe was crafted by either William Evans I or II in Bristol England.
Maureen contacted the Delaware Historical Society to share her exciting find and they've asked to add the pipe to their collection!

Getting to Battery Park New Castle
Battery Park is nestled within historic New Castle, Delaware. It's a beautiful area to explore! Paved with cobblestone streets, shops, and restaurants, take some time to check out the town after your beach combing.
